Why is it that over the past decade, millions upon millions of network marketers that are seeking to have a successful network marketing business find themselves, collectively, spending millions upon millions of dollars on "how-to" training books, CDs, tapes, magazines, self-help seminars, etc.? It seems as though everyone who is serious about being successful in network marketing is trying to learn some sort of MLM or Network Marketing "secret". They do everything the books and tapes tell them to do, and they memorize all the latest network marketing terms. They follow the instructions given to them by their network marketing company and their upline, yet 95% of all network marketers never make enough money to ever be considered financially free.
The primary reason why most people fail in network marketing is because they are recruiting the wrong people. Your neighbor isn't necessarily your best bet as a business partner. Your Uncle Joe, who has changed jobs more than he changes his socks may not be your best home business partner either. Why is it that most network marketing companies teach you to recruit people into the business? Why don't they teach you how to sell the product? In most network marketing companies, you get a higher percentage of commission when you actually sell the product vs. recruiting someone into the business. Yes, if your new recruit goes "all out" and is a MLM Sponsoring Superstar, then your business will see some growth. However, it will not be long term growth because your Superstar's recruits probably won't be able to duplicate those methods. Either they won't be able to duplicate them, or they simply won't want to duplicate them.
Just last week, I called a prospect who entered her information on my web site. She was requesting information on how to recruit more distributors and customers into her home business. When I asked her how long she had been in network marketing, she sighed very loudly and told me that it is not called "Network Marketing" anymore... it is now called "Relationship Marketing" and then she went on and on about how she had joined a network marketing company 20 years ago, but never really did anything with the business side of it because her career was so much more important at the time than building a business. She then told me that now she's looking to get back into "Relationship Marketing" and wanted to know how to build her home based business as quickly as possible. She then went on to tell me that "Relationship Marketing" is a better term to use than "Network Marketing" and started correcting me on everything that I said. So, here we have a person that asked me for information on how to grow a network marketing business, yet she wouldn't stop talking long enough for me to get a word in edge-wise. Needless to say, this person probably won't ever find success in a home based business because she's not ready. She doesn't realize that she has to change in order to obtain the success that she says she wants to have. Most people are looking for a quick fix and just aren't willing to put in the time and effort it takes to truly become successful in a home based business.
Then, there are those that truly want to succeed in a home based business, and have a huge "reason why". Whether it be so they can retire early and move to some exotic location, build a dream home, put their kids through college, become missionaries to third-world countries, become foster parents, give more money to the church, and just about any other reason out there. It doesn't matter what the reason is, the first step if figuring out WHY you want to build a home based business. The next step any network marketer must logically take is figuring out if their "reason why" is big enough to really mean something. As children, we were asked the same question over and over again: "What do you want to be when you grow up?". I doubt any of us said we wanted to be Network Marketers (mainly because we had no clue what that meant). We either wanted to be teachers, astronauts, professional sports stars, secretaries, car mechanics, rock stars, you name it.
Once you figure out what you really want to be doing with your life, then you can start to put the pieces together to make that dream become a reality using Network Marketing as the driving force to your dreams. As you progress, your "reason why" will change and become more laser targeted. Nobody was born successful. They became successful. They became successful because they took the steps necessary to become better. Not better at selling lotion, lipstick, travel, phone plans, or energy drinks... they became better people which attracted more qualified people into their lives.
